The appearance of the Planet Mars which is Green

JAKARTA – Mars is commonly known as the Red Planet. But it turns out that there is another side to the planet that makes Mars look green.

Quoting from Scitechdaily, based on observations from NASA, Mars will look green at night. This is due to chemical reactions that occur on the surface of the Martian atmosphere.

This phenomenon was detected from one of the MAVEN spacecraft, which orbits the planet Mars. Over the past few years, MAVEN has made observations in the ultraviolet spectrum and the result is that the Martian night sky is a greenish color.

“The MAVEN images offer our first global insight into the motion of the atmosphere in the central atmosphere of Mars, the critical region where air flows carry gas between the lowest and highest layers of the atmosphere,” said University of Colorado (LASP) researcher from the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), Nick Schneider.

Using the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer (IUVS) instrument, it is known that the greenish glow on the surface of the planet Mars occurs due to the interaction of sunlight with air atoms and molecules. These emissions are hard to see, even from Earth, that’s why the greenish glow of Mars can only be seen at night.

“MAVEN’s major discoveries about atmospheric loss and climate change demonstrate the importance of the broad circulation patterns that transport atmospheric gases around the world and from the surface to the edges of space,” said another LASP researcher, Sonal Jain.

For information, MAVEN has been orbiting Mars since 2014 and marks the first time such an instrument has orbited the Red Planet. Study data were collected for two consecutive years, which equates to 687 Earth days.

Next, the scientists plan to see the night light through the flank of Mars, not from above, using data captured by IUVS. This new perspective will be used to more accurately understand vertical winds and changing seasons.

By analyzing the ultraviolet wavelengths, it allows scientists to visualize the effects of winds around the entire planet and high waves in the Martian atmosphere. Later, this discovery could help create a more detailed picture of Mars’ weather, which will aid the first crewed missions to the Red Planet in 2030.
