
JAKARTA – Recently, a huge explosion occurred in the city of Beirut, Lebanon. The explosion has left deep enough wounds for the community because it has claimed many lives and made hundreds of people homeless.
The impact of the explosion also left a sizable crater basin at the scene. Through satellite imagery, rescue teams have mapped the impact of the damage from the explosion that occurred on Wednesday morning, August 5.
Quoting the Earthobservatory page, in collaboration with the NASA Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), the researchers re-enacted the effects of the massive explosion that was alleged to have occurred due to the ammonium nitrate compound. As a result, the shock effect resulting from the explosion also damaged buildings and areas far away from the scene.

Clearly visible on the image on the map, dark red pixels such as those in and around the Port of Beirut indicate the most severe damage. Areas that are lightly damaged in orange and areas in yellow are likely to have minor damage. Each colored pixel represents an area of 30 meters.
“Our observations and analysis can help our partners increase their situational awareness of systemic risks and real-time events, leading to more informed decisions and early action,” said Head of NASA’s Disaster Applications team, David Green, Tuesday, August 11.
The results of this re-mapping can help the SAR team map the area of damage and rescue missions for local residents. The level of damage in a particular area can be a big indicator for emergency personnel trying to find survivors among the rubble.

“We look at areas of population that may be exposed and infrastructure that is fragile, as well as areas that are experiencing social stress and crises. We model and map risks, as well as track emissions, debris, infrastructure damage and other effects,” continued David.
As previously reported, the devastating explosion that occurred in Beirut was thought to have originated from 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been unsafe stored in a warehouse near the port in six years. That is what caused two big explosions to hit the entire city of Beirut last week.
Until now, the local government is still recording losses which are estimated at 10 to 15 million US dollars, equivalent to RP219 billion. The impact of the explosion also forced more than hundreds of people to lose their homes.
